Characteristic of the pond-garden is, of course, water. Not only by different ponds, which may or not may be connected, but also by rain-gutts, large pots and all kinds of containers, in which many species of waterplants can grow. These are important style-elements. Moreover wooden garden-walks, stairs and bridges will provide structure.
A pond-garden can be created in a small city-garden as well as in a large garden in the country. The construction will be quite expensive, because a lot of work has to be done and lots of materials are needed. In spite of that a pond-garden can be very satisfying for many years due to its exotic appearance, which will make the investment more than worth it. Bamboo and other grasses, typical swamp-plants and shrubs are the most important plants in the pond-garden, apart from the 'real' waterplants like water-lily etc.
In contradiction to what many people would think, this type of garden causes a lot of work. First of all it will take quite a long time, before a biological balance has been reached in the ponds and the plants will grow well. You will have to interfere quite often to avoid the death of your fish or waterplants. Sometimes chemicals are inevitable. And when the balance will be reached, at a right start usually within two years, it will cost a lot of time to keep some parasiting waterplants from growing all over the place. Definately a garden for the real garden-lover and for those, who want to and  are able to invest a lot of time into it, to keep it in balance.
