garden-design

On this page I will give brief descriptions of the different garden-styles, which can be realized throughout the moderate climate-zones of mother earth. A desert-garden, mediterranean garden or tropical garden could of course be beautiful, but is impossible to achieve in a moderate climate, where winterfrosts are common. Having a try will always end up in a big disappointment. Below you can explore a selection of garden-styles, which are applicable to areas similar to Central- and Northwestern-Europe.
If you wish I could make a scale-design for your own garden in a chosen style:

Of course it is possible to combine different styles or to devide a large garden into different 'themes', which are connected  smoothly or, on the contrary, are tightly seperated by hedges or walls.

The choise for a certain design is mainly dependant on how the garden is situated and on it's environment. The amount of sunlight and shade,  type of soil, differences of level, moisture-conditions of the soil, but also the taste  of the owners and their budget must be considered in order to make an adequate design. This will guarentee, that the future garden will be in harmony with it's environment en that the owner can be satisfied with the result for many years.
Personally I am not charmed by 'trendy' gardens, which often look like a 'stone-desert' and where half the assortment of a construction-market is used. After one or two years 'in' will be 'out' again and everything wil have to be replaced by the newest trends for lots of money. Even worse in my opinion is, that even the plants have to be trendy and as a result of that  will bore the owner very soon. A "throw-away-garden". Unfortunately many garden-designers contribute to this, especially on TV and in garden-magazines.

During the last few years I designed gardens for very different people in very different styles. I am specialized in 'romantic gardens' and 'cottage-gardens'. But all the other styles, mentioned above, do have my sympathy and expertise as well.
My final choise for a particular style will be a combination of the wishes of the owner(s), my own ideas and on how the garden will fit in its immediate environment. This will result in a coloured, sealed and scaled design (1:50, 2 cm will match 1 meter in realty). The drawing will present the plants with a code, which refers to the encluded plants-list. Moreover a work-scheme will be included, in which the work, that has to be done, is enumerated in a chronological order. This work-scheme will also enumerate the materials (plus global quantities), which have to be  bought.
Using the work-scheme, the plants-list and the design-drawing any reliable professional gardener can manage to carry out what has to be done to achieve the aimed result. Or, if you are skilled and motivated yourself, you can do most of the work with your own hands and save a very lot of money.

My approach step by step:
  • First I will send you a detailed list with lots of questions, which you are requested to fill in and return to me by email or post-mail.

  • Then I would like to make an appointment, to see the location with my own eyes. But because this probably isn't possible due to the distance (except you would pay for my journey, which is possible, but unlikely),  I would like you to send me lots and lots of information and photos about your garden-area.  Drawings at scale and photos can be very useful to get a picture and  be able to make a design "from a distance". I have done it this way several times before and my orderers were very satisfied.

  • After I received all your information I can make you an offer. If you agree, you will let me know by email.

  • Then I will start thinking and drawing, as soon as half of the amount agreed will have be deposited on my bank-account. Half way my design I will send you  a sample by email. If you accept it, I will finish the design after you have paid the other half of the agreed amount to my bank-account.
I will send the sealed scaled design in colour, the plants-list and the work-scheme utterly two weeks after I received the agreed amount of money. The design will be sent registrated in a cardboard box. Of course I would love to deliver it myself and explain it to you, but that would cost you just too much, I guess...

Just to give you an idea of the total costs of the design:

  • travelling-costs would be 30 Eurocents per kilometer, vice versa

  • - up  to 100 square-meters: € 125,- (basic price)
    - above 100 square meters: € 1,25 per square-meter of your garden-area, plants-list and work-scheme inclusive
       (If your garden would measure 8 x 25 meters= 200 square-meters, this would mean € 250,-)
     - Bigger gardens will be reduced in price per square meter. Talking about the price is always possible.

  • No further costs.

If you are interested in a thorough garden-design and an offer without engagement, please click the email-link and let me know. I will answer you as soon as possible. Thank you.  Email for gardendesign
