Characteristic of the natural garden is the absence of style-elements. The
overgrowth is fully dependant on the natural conditon of the soil, its
moisture-conditions and the immediate surroundings. In an urban situation this
type of garden would be somewhat misplaced. But in a rural area it could be very
beautiful.
The basic idea of the natural garden is, that only native
plants, shrubs and trees are allowed to grow in it and that there is as little
as possible interference into the natural processes. The natural garden is
very dynamic. It changes all the time. Some plants will disappear and new ones
will replace them.
'Weeds' like stinging nettle, dandelion, grasses, waybread,
wood-hyacinth, ferns etc. belong into it. Just like elder-berry, willow, maple
and lots of wild flowers.
The natural garden begins right next to the house, where some
flowering plants like lupin, foxglove and golden rod are situated for the little
extra. A rough lawn, which more looks like a meadow, which is mawn only
once a month, will be the 'terrace'. Wood-cuttings are used to create hedges,
which will become overgrown by ivy, clematis montana and honeysuckle. Here and
there a fruit-tree will grow. The garden-walks are made of natural materials
(wood). The natural garden needs very little maintanance. The 'work' is
limited to mawing the meadow and keeping the garden-walks free of weeds.
